Student Work Initiative The Town of Ithaca is operating a youth employment project for youth within the Joint Youth Commission municipalities (Town of Ithaca, Villages of Lansing & Cayuga Heights). The programs are designed to increase employment opportunities for youth who are between the ages of 14-18 and could benefit from job seeking and on the job training assistance. Employment training, including job readiness and skill building workshops, will be offered. The Town is currently recruiting both youth and sites for these youth to gain constructive job skills and will employ the youth while they train for up to 100 hours. Learning Web Services The Learning Web provides Tompkins County youth ages 11-20 with hands-on learning opportunities in the community. Learning Web activities help youth develop their skills, interests and knowledge of the world of adult roles and responsibilities and encourage the development of workplace habits that they can use while in school or in future employment. In addition to being eligible for the Web’s county-wide apprenticeship program, Town of Ithaca youth receive additional apprenticeship opportunities and youth, ages 11 to 14, can participate in community service projects through the Web’s Youth Works Program. Youth Works is a partnership program between the Web and the Joint Youth Commission of the Town of Ithaca, the Village of Cayuga Heights, and the Village of Lansing. Through this program, youth can explore their interests, either career-related or non-career-related, through tours of various work sites or job shadowing experiences. For a more in-depth look at a field of interest youth can participate in an informal apprenticeship under the one-to-one guidance of a volunteer community mentor. School-year community service activities and a more intensive Summer Community Service Program are available to youth ages 11 to 14. Service program participants have fun, explore their communities, identify community needs, and design and implement community service projects that address those needs.
